Scoliosis refers to the twisting of the spine. The spine assumes an S-shaped appearance instead of a straight one. Scoliosis is often detected in school physical examinations. However, scoliosis commonly occurs in adults. Pain and a visible spine deformity are hallmarks of the disorder. Advanced disease can have pinched nerves causing leg pain and problems walking. The most severe cases compress the lung and cause breathing problems.
Physical therapy, chiropractic and injections can be tried to treat scoliosis; however, surgical stabilization is required to correct the curvature and prevent further curvature.
